Public Policy Updates

Every Lawsuit Has a Price Tag

Ohio’s economic strength is no accident – it’s the result of years of deliberate, balanced policymaking that allows businesses to grow and families to thrive. A fair and predictable judicial system has been central to that success, giving employers the confidence to invest and communities the stability to prosper.

Now is the time to capitalize on Ohio’s economic edge, not put it at risk. Strengthening Ohio’s proven tort reforms will keep our economy competitive, control costs for families and businesses, and send a clear message that the Buckeye State is committed to fairness, growth, and opportunity.
1.

Oppose HB 447/SB 292

HB 447/SB 292 Raise the Cost of Doing Business in Ohio – A Price We All Pay.

HB 447/SB 292 reverses course on smart, responsible tort reform – raising caps on non-economic damages in lawsuits against Ohio businesses and guaranteeing that costs keep climbing year after year, forever.

A Vote For HB 447/SB 292 Will:

  • Drive up the cost of everyday goods and services for Ohio families.
  • Encourage more lawsuits and larger payouts, including against small business owners.
  • Undercut Ohio’s competitiveness with states that are strengthening, not weakening, tort reform.
  • Reduce access to care and increase costs for Ohio’s healthcare system.

And the worst part? It’s not a one-time hit – the costs just keep rising.

Support HB 105/SB 10

HB 105/SB 10 Make Needed Reforms to Third-Party Litigation Funding (TPLF), Requiring Accountability and Transparency for Ohioans

TPLF allows outside investors – including foreign entities – to fund lawsuits in exchange for a share in the financial outcome. While originally intended to help those without the means to afford legal action, this industry has morphed into a profit-driven enterprise that puts our courts, economy, and national interests at risk.

A Vote For HB 105/SB 10 Will:

  • Defend National Interests: Ban agreements with foreign entities that may threaten U.S. business or security.
  • Ensure Transparency: Require disclosure of funding agreements to level the legal playing field.
  • Protect Consumers: Establish contract standards to prevent predatory lending practices.
  • Preserve Judicial Integrity: Prohibit funders from influencing decisions about legal strategy or settlement.

Why It Matters:
Ohio families, workers, and businesses deserve a justice system that is fair, transparent, and focused on justice —not profits. Without reform, unchecked TPLF will continue to drive up costs, delay justice, and compromise our courts.
